The discipline of Industrial Engineering was initially developed by several individuals who sought methods to improve work productivity through more effective and efficient work systems by examining the interaction between humans and machines as an integrated system.
More than a century ago, the principles of scientific management created a new paradigm during the transition from an agrarian economy to an industrial economy. In essence, the principles of scientific management applied through work design studies—such as work study and work design—continue to be practiced by industrial engineering professionals today, although in a significantly different context. Historically, the development of industrial engineering has been closely linked to mechanical engineering, especially in matters related to production systems. Industrial and technological developments eventually created the need for a discipline capable of managing manufacturing systems on a broader scale. In line with this evolution, industrial engineering continues to grow and has become a highly essential discipline since the early second millennium.
The term “industry” has a broad meaning. From the perspective of output, industry can be classified into two categories: industries that produce tangible goods (manufacturing) and service industries that do not produce physical products. Based on the value-added process, industries are classified into upstream/basic industries and downstream industries. Upstream industries typically deal with technical issues, producing raw materials or semi-finished goods that serve as inputs for other industries. Downstream industries are closer to end-users, where economic and marketing aspects are more prominent. In addressing various industrial challenges, the field of industrial engineering always considers two dimensions: technical (engineering) and non-technical (economic). Therefore, a “techno-economic” outlook continually influences the development of Industrial Engineering education.
The Institute of Industrial Engineering (IIE) defines Industrial Engineering as follows:
“Industrial Engineering is concerned with the design, improvement and installation of integrated systems of people, information, equipment, and energy. It draws upon specialized knowledge and skills in the mathematical, physical and social sciences, together with the principles and methods of analysis and design to specify, predict and evaluate the results to be obtained from such systems.”
The Industrial Engineering Study Program is one of the academic programs under the Faculty of Industrial Technology, Universitas Trisakti. It was established based on the decree from Kopertis Region III No. 007/KOP/III/S/84 on 17 May 1984. The program obtained “Registered” status in 1987 based on the decree of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia No. 0827/0/1987. Four years later, through the issuance of the decree of the Minister of Education and Culture No. 0643/0/1991, the program earned “Recognized” status. Subsequently, on 16 August 1993, with the Directorate General of Higher Education Decree No. 494/DIKTI/Kep/1993, the program received “Equivalent” status.
In 1998, following its first five-year evaluation conducted by the National Accreditation Board (BAN-PT), the Industrial Engineering Study Program received an A Plus (Pembina) Accreditation Certificate, as stated in BAN-PT Decree No. 001/BAN-PT/Ak-1/VIII/1998 dated 11 August 1998. Based on the second five-year evaluation conducted by BAN-PT, the program received an A (Very Good) Accreditation Certificate, listed in BAN-PT Decree No. 012/BAN-PT/Ak-1/S1/VII/2003 dated 9 July 2003. On 21 August 2009, the program once again achieved an A Accreditation Certificate as a result of its third BAN-PT evaluation cycle, specified in Decree No. 009/BAN-PT/Ak-SURV-I/S1/VIII/2009.
The program earned an A Accreditation Certificate following the fourth BAN-PT five-year evaluation cycle, as stated in BAN-PT Decree No. 199/SK/BAN-PT/AkSURV/S1/VII/2014, dated 12 July 2014 and valid from 13 December 2013 to 13 December 2018. The program then achieved another A Accreditation Certificate based on BAN-PT Decree No. 1613/SK/BAN-PT/Akred/S/VI/2018. Currently, the Industrial Engineering Study Program holds an “Excellent” Accreditation from the Independent Accreditation Institution for Engineering Study Programs (LAM Teknik), as stated in Decree No. 0826/SK/LAM Teknik/AS/XII/2024, valid from 21 December 2024 to 20 December 2029.
The Industrial Engineering Study Program of the Faculty of Industrial Technology, Universitas Trisakti, earned Provisional IABEE Accreditation based on IABEE Decree No. 91/PII-IABEE/XII/2018. In 2021, the program received IABEE General Accreditation, based on Decree No. 27/PII-IABEE/III/2021. In 2024, the program once again obtained IABEE Accredited Status, as stated in Decree No. 13/PII-IABEE/III/2024, valid from 18 March 2021 to 31 March 2026.
As of 2025, at 41 years of establishment, the Industrial Engineering Study Program has produced 7,100 alumni, while the number of active students enrolled in the 2025/2026 academic year is 385 students.
