The Development of Industrial Engineering Disciplines
The Industrial Engineering Discipline was originally developed by several individuals who were trying to find a method or way to increase work productivity through a more effective and efficient work system by studying the work interaction between humans and machines as an integrated system.
More than a century ago, scientific management theory produced a new paradigm when moving from an agrarian economy to an industrial economy. Basically the principles of scientific management that are applied through work design studies, such as work study and work design are still being carried out by industrial engineering graduates to this day, even though they are carried out in much different nuances. In essence, the history of the development of industrial engineering disciplines is closely related to mechanical engineering disciplines, especially those related to production systems. The development of industrial and technological activities eventually led to a new need for a discipline capable of dealing with a broad manufacturing system. In line with this, the industrial engineering discipline has continued to develop and has become a much-needed discipline since the second millennium.
Industry has a very broad understanding, in terms of output, industry can be grouped into two categories, namely industries that produce products (manufacture) and service industries that do not produce products. Judging from the aspect of the added value process, the industry is divided into basic/upstream industry and downstream industry. Upstream industries are often faced with technical problems, the output produced is usually still in the form of raw materials or semi-finished goods as inputs for other industries. The downstream industry is closer to the end-user, so the most prominent aspects of this industry are the economic and marketing aspects. Furthermore, in solving various industrial problems, industrial engineering disciplines always look from two sides, namely those related to technical (engineering) and non-technical (economic) problems. Therefore, the ‘techno-economic’ insight will always color the development of Industrial Engineering education. The Institute of Industrial Engineering – IIE defines Industrial Engineering as follows:
Industrial Engineering is concerned with the design, improvement and installation of integrated system of people, information, equipment, and energy. It draws upon specialized knowledge and skills in the mathematical, physical and social sciences, together with the principles and methods of analysis and design to specify predict and evaluate the results to be obtained from such system.
Development of Industrial Engineering Study Program, Trisakti University
Industrial Engineering Study Program is one of the study programs under the Faculty of Industrial Technology, Trisakti University. The Industrial Engineering Study Program was established on the basis of the Decree of Kopertis Region III No. 007/KOP/III/S/84 on 17 May 1984. The status of ‘Registered’ was obtained in 1987, based on the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia No. 0827/0/1987. Four years later, with the issuance of the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture No. 0643/0/1991, Industrial Engineering Study Program obtained the status of ‘Recognized’. Subsequently, on August 16, 1993, with the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education No. 494/DIKTI/Kep/1993, the status of ‘Equalized’ was obtained.
In 1998, as a result of the first five-year evaluation conducted by the National Accreditation Board (BAN), the Industrial Engineering Study Program obtained Certification with Accreditation A Plus (Guidance). This is stated in the Decree of the Higher Education BAN No. : 001/BAN-PT/Ak-1/VIII/1998, dated August 11, 1998. Based on the results of the second five-year evaluation conducted by the Higher Education BAN, the Industrial Engineering Study Program obtained Certification with Accreditation A (Very Good). This is stated in the Decree of the Higher Education BAN No. 012/BAN-PT/Ak-1/S1/VII/2003, dated July 9, 2003. On August 21, 2009, the Industrial Engineering Study Program obtained Certification with Accreditation A as the result of the third five-year evaluation conducted by the Higher Education BAN and stated in SK BAN College No. 009/BAN-PT/Ak-SURV-I/S1/VIII/2009, dated August 21, 2009.
The Industrial Engineering Study Program obtained Accreditation A as a result of the fourth five-year evaluation that had been determined by the Higher Education BAN and listed in the Higher Education BAN Decree No. 199/SK/BAN-PT/AkSURV/S1/VII/2014, dated 12 July 2014 and valid from 13 December 2013 until 13 December 2018. The Industrial Engineering Study Program obtained Accreditation A which has been determined by the Higher Education BAN and is listed in the Higher Education BAN Decree No. 1613/SK/BAN-PT/Akred/S/VI/2018.. Currently the Industrial Engineering study program has obtained Superior Accreditation which has been determined by the Higher Education BAN and is listed in the Higher Education BAN Decree No. 9147/SK/BAN-PT/Akred-Itnl/S/VI/2021, valid from 30 June 2021 until 26 June 2024.
The Industrial Engineering Study Program FTI Trisakti University received Provisional IABEE (Indonesian Accreditation Board for Engineering Eduation) Accreditation based on IABEE Decree No. 91/PII-IABEE/XII/2018. Currently, the Industrial Engineering Study Program at the Trisakti University FTI has obtained the IABEE (Indonesian Accreditation Board for Engineering Eduation) General International Accreditation based on IABEE Decree No. 27/PII-IABEE/III/2021. Valid from March 18, 2021 until March 31, 2024.
Until the end of the Even Semester of the 2020/2021 Academic Year, the Industrial Engineering Study Program, Trisakti University has had as many as 6560 alumni, while the students enrolled in 2020/2021 as students of the Industrial Engineering Study Program, currently amount to 595 students.
